Adaptive Placement Test Information

Here's some information about the Adaptive Placement Test and how it works within your students' adaptive learning experience.

1. Is the Adaptive Placement test an assessment?

Yes. In the Placement, your students are assessed and appropriately placed within their Learning Path. Remember, a Learning Path is simply the concepts you want your students to master or focus on. Your students can be in a pre-built path or one that you have customized. Once the Placement has ended, the student simply continues in their path but in Practice mode. Reassure your students that each question answered still earns a coin, counts towards the weekly goal, and places them where they need to be within their Learning Path!

2. Does the Placement have a fixed # of questions or amount of time?

No. The length of the test will vary for each student based on how many concepts the student already knows within the Learning Path. The Adaptive Placement adapts to the student as the assessment is performed in order of dependency of the concepts. The longer the student is taking the Placement the further along in their Learning Path they will be placed. Review Students A and B below. The Placement Test was launched within the same Learning Path. However, Student A took 5 minutes and passed 9 concepts. On the other hand, Student B took 42 minutes and passed 74 concepts.

In the same path, Student A and Student B will continue in their Learning Paths at different places based on how many concepts they already went through while in the Placement.

3. Will ScootPad assess all concepts in the Learning Path?

Yes, if the student knows each concept presented, but no if the student shows, at any point, that they are struggling. ScootPad will assess concepts based on their dependency on other concepts from the learning path. From the student and teacher’s perspective, the Placement Test would need to end and this student will begin practicing due to the dependency of the “practice needed concepts” on the “not attempted concepts”. Another student may go further and yet another student may need to start practicing sooner.

4. Can I control the Placement?

Yes, on the Adaptive Practice dashboard, you can manually cancel the Placement Test and students will immediately continue practicing where we stopped. To prevent the Placement from auto-assigning upon enrolling a new student, ensure that the setting is correct for the specific content area.

5. What does a student see when practicing?

ScootPad seamlessly spirals concepts each time students launch an adaptive practice. This content represents a variety of item types across DOK levels. If students struggle, ScootPad will enable automatic intervention and scaffolding to fill skill gaps. This is an instant teacher time-saver! When students do not respond to ScootPad’s automatic intervention, the concepts are flagged as requiring reteaching and will show up on the RTI-Aligned Intervention Monitor for the teacher to take action. Students also have access to lessons during practice (i.e. on-demand and time-out lessons) or when specifically assigned by their teachers.

6. What happens to the concepts passed on the Placement?

The students will continue practicing with a head start!  If there are 50 concepts in the Learning Path and the student passes 15, they have 35 to go! These passed concepts plus the concepts that are being practiced (blue), which meet the rigor and proficiency criteria (marked as practice done), are then colored turquoise in the Learning Path and will be revisited with strategically spaced quick assessments, called Mastery Checks. Concepts successfully passed during the Mastery Check are marked “Mastered” in the Learning Path. Learn more about “Automatic Mastery Checks” by clicking here!
